Man sentenced to life in prison after second-degree murder plea in Wainwright homicide

The plea stems from a 2022 homicide

Joseph Fabian Dube has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Nicole Amundson.

Dube, 54, entered the plea on Dec. 4, 2023 and was sentenced on May 23, 2025. Police say he has been in custody since Feb. 2022 and is eligible to request parole in 11 years.

Amundson was murdered on Feb. 22, 2022, in Wainwright. Police arrived at the scene shortly before 4 p.m., responding to a 911 call in relation to a break and enter in progress at a house near the Wainwright Hospital.   When they arrived, within minutes, they located a male assaulting a female victim with a weapon.  Police arrested the male and immediately began life-saving efforts on the victim.
 
EMS transported the victim to hospital; however, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. 
 
Dube was originally charged with first-degree murder.  

According to police, Dube and Amundson were known to each other, but they were estranged.
