With the United Conservative Party in power for only a matter of week, changes are continuing to happen rapidly on the political scene.
Jason Nixon, Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA is one of the upcoming young politicals who has been part of these changes.
Nixon was appointed as Alberta’s minister of environment and parks as well as well as government house leader on April 30.
The MLA has been a major player in Alberta politics for several years, and will, no doubt, bring his substantial legislative record to his portfolio.
He said he is excited and humbled to receive the appointment.
“Serving as the minister of environment and parks as well as government house leader is a tremendous honour. I am incredibly grateful to Premier Kenney for the opportunity to serve Albertans under his leadership. The swearing in ceremony with Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor, Her Honour Lois Mitchell, was an unforgettable experience.”
He noted that he is pleased that the NDPs plans to make changes to the Big Horn Country will not happen.
“They are completely stopped,” he said, adding that the UCP is looking at increasing investment in the area.
Working with the premier to develop the carbon tax repeal act is the first order of business, Nixon said.
He also wants to get unemployed Albertans back to work.
” I commit to always putting Albertans first in the decision-making process. Alberta has a proud history of environmental stewardship, and the United Conservative Caucus recognizes that conservation, economic activity, and recreation are all important functions that can and should support each other.”
Nixon has held many positions within the assembly, including official opposition house leader and chief opposition whip. He also has performed a variety of shadow minister roles and has served as a member of several legislative standing committees.
Nixon, who lives in west-central Alberta with his wife, Tiffany and children Markus, Austin and Chyanne grew up in this province.
Nixon’s brother Jeremy won a provincial seat in Calgary-Klein riding. The men are the first brothers to serve in the Alberta legislature at the same time.
Nixon is also one of five UCP MLAs named Jason, along with Premier Jason Kenney, Jason Copping, Jason Stephan and Jason Luan.
