No need now to borrow for pool

By TREENA MIELKE

Thanks to good timing, money for a new swimming pool in Rimbey, which has been coming in from surprise sources, has eliminated the need for council to borrow a million dollars to complete the project.

At its regular meeting March 23, council was notified by CAO Tony Goode that the town will receive an additional $250,000 from the RinC program for the Rimbey Aquatic Centre. This brings the total RinC grant funds up to $1 million, which is the maximum a municipality is eligible to receive from the federal grant.

Earlier this month, Ponoka County announced it plans to contribute another $500,000 to the pool, which brings its contribution up to a million as well.

Goode said the town is still short about $250,000 for the project and will have to look at options to come up with the funding.

“We have some leeway,” he said.

Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson said the extra funding is “good news.

“It’s money we won’t have to find next year.”

The outdoor swimming pool complex, estimated to cost $3.006 million, is to include a junior Olympic five-lane outdoor pool, two hot tubs, a spray park and an 4,600 square-foot office/change room
