One teen killed in school bus collision near Rimbey

At approx 8:15 on the morning of Wednesday, April 9 a school bus was involved in a collision on Highway #53, approximately three kilometres east of Highway #22, near Rimbey.

Preliminary investigation indicates the bus, which was westbound, was stopped picking up some school children, with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) stopped behind the bus. A gravel truck, which was also westbound struck the SUV and the bus from behind.

The bus had a number of children on board, but the exact number is not available at this time. Two teenage youths were injured and taken to hospital. One female youth has since passed away and the other has been transferred to an Edmonton area hospital.

An RCMP crash investigation team and Rimbey Detachment members are presently on scene and will be conducting their investigation.

Other children have been triaged at the scene by EMS and are being taken away for further treatment if necessary.

As Next of Kin notifications have been completed it is now possible, with the permission of the family, to release the name of the victim in Wednesday’s early morning school bus collision near Rimbey,

Deceased from injuries suffered in the collision is Jennifer Dawn Noble, age 17 of Rimbey. She was a Grade 12 student at Rimbey Junior/Senior High School.

The name of the other injured students will not be released.

The investigation is still underway at this time, looking at all aspects of the collision including weather and road conditions, all aspects of the drivers including physical state as well as driving abilities and mechanical evaluations of the vehicles. This is an extensive and complex examination, undergone by RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT).

There will be no decision on possible charges until the cause(s) of this collision are determined.
