The possibility of eliminating single use plastic bags in Rimbey was discussed at council’s Dec. 11 meeting.

As part of the discussion, council looked at a bylaw now in place in the City of Wetaskiwin.

The bylaw prohibits the distribution of plastic checkout bags for the purpose of reducing the presence of plastic bags in the community.

The bylaw states the City of Wetaskiwin recognizes the detrimental effects of plastic bags on the environment and on the aesthetics of the community and wishes to reduce the presence of plastic bags entering the waste stream and the environment.

Council agreed that the use of plastic bags is detrimental to the environment, however, they weren’t ready to commit to drafting a similar bylaw for the town.

“I don’t like this bylaw at all,” said Coun. Gayle Rondeel.

Council agreed to invite Christina Seidel to attend the town hall open forum to be held at 7 p.m. at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre on Jan. 15 to talk about recycling and the possibility of working towards eliminating single use plastic bags in Rimbey.
