RCMP investigate potpourri of problems

.

Last week the Rimbey RCMP responded to more than 34 calls for services, including more fuel thefts, domestic assaults and other issues, quad and motorcycle accidents.

Another fuel theft reported

Another incident of fuel being stolen from heavy equipment was reported to police. There has been an increase in these thefts in recent weeks, in Rimbey and neighboring detachment areas. The RCMP are requesting that any suspicious vehicles around heavy equipment be reported to the police.

Drunk changes her mind

A member of the Rimbey RCMP received a call from a citizen who advised she had been drinking and didn’t want to drive and needed assistance. Upon attending the ungrateful citizen decided to assault the police officer and tried to drive off while the member was standing next to her vehicle, causing the member to have to jump in the vehicle to stop it. This resident of Rimbey was subsequently arrested and numerous charges are pending.

Domestic violence reports

Several domestic violence incidents were reported to the Rimbey RCMP. One Rimbey resident is facing assault and numerous firearms charges, while a Red Deer resident is facing criminal harassment charges. The Rimbey and District Victim Service unit assisted the RCMP in these and other files.

Drivers injured

There was also a quad accident at Medicine Lake involving a sober male wearing a helmet, and because of that, his injuries were minor. A motorcyclist also sober and wearing a helmet, wasn’t so lucky when he lost control of his bike and drove into the ditch, he was transported by STARS air Ambulance, his injuries although serious were not life-threatening.

Back to school safety

The Rimbey RCMP would like to remind all citizens of Rimbey school will be back in session this week. As such, the following needs to be taken into consideration:

• There will be increased use of crosswalks as the children walk to school.

• School buses will be out and about. Please be respectful and never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing.

• School zone speed limits are back in effect.

Rimbey RCMP will be out throughout the school year enforcing these and other Traffic Safety Act laws.

Distracted driving law

Alberta’s new distracted driving law is coming into effect on Sept. 1. That means that texting and numerous other activities that we all know distract us from being the good drivers we can be, are no longer permitted and punishable by a $172 fine. You can still talk on the cellphone while driving as long as you are using a hands-free device. For more information on this law please see Ministry of Transportation website www.transportation.alberta.ca
