After dealing with COVID restrictions for the last few years and hosting the Remembrance Day ceremony outside, the Rimbey Legion will be bringing the event back inside for 2022.

On Friday, Nov. 11, Rimbey’s Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. The service will begin at 10:45 a.m. and the two minutes of silence will be held at 11 a.m.

“We are doing this for the community,” said Lance Hannesson, past president with the Legion. “It’s good for the community to be able to come and honour their family members who have served and who are serving now.”

Hannesson said about 400 people have attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the community centre in the past, and it would be good to get back up to those numbers again.

“In the last few years, we haven’t had the turnout at the Legion outside, which was disappointing, but we understand,” he said, adding that many people did livestream the ceremony and that’s something the Legion may look at doing again.

The Legion is still putting the pieces of the ceremony into place and additional volunteers are always welcome. If anyone would like to volunteer, or if anyone would like to lay a wreath during the ceremony, they can reach out to Hannesson at 403-913-9795.

“We know the community honours its veterans, just by the response we’ve had with our poppy campaign in the last eight years that I’ve been doing it, and previous to that,” Hannsesson said. “They have always honoured us, honoured them, by participating.”
