The message of the Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Bentley Community Church Nov. 11 was one of remembering sacrifices - not only of the soldiers who fought for freedom, but of those left at home as well.

The ceremony, conducted by Rev. Greg Rathjen, began with the playing of First Post and two minutes of silence.

Pam Hansen, the granddaughter of Linda Peterson, read a list of deceased servicemen from the Bentley area.

Peighton Melton then read her speech entitled “The history of November 11th.”

Melton’s speech spoke of family members wondering about the welfare of their loved ones who had gone overseas.

“There are sacrifices everywhere, not just on the battlefield,” she said.

From 1914 to 1918, over 600,000 Canadian soldiers fought with Britain.

They gained the reputation of being the best attack force of the Western Allied troops after Vimy Ridge, says Melton.

Wreaths were laid by representatives and members of the congregation on behalf of motherhood, the Royal Canadian Legion, The RCMP, the Elks, the Order of Royal Purple, the Bentley Fire Department, Bentley School and by family members.

The Bentley Girl Guides troop made a presentation of making their wreath and explaining the significance of plants and flowers used, before laying it.

Cst. N.C. Giurgea laid a wreath on behalf of the Sylvan Lake RCMP.

Deputy Mayor of Bentley Neil Maki laid a wreath on behalf of town council.

Representatives laid wreaths on behalf of MP Blaine Calkins and MLA Jason Nixon, who were not present.

Two videos were shown, one about veterans and a the music video “A Pittance of Time” by Terry Kelly.

“There’s a price to be paid if you go, if you stay, freedom is fought for and won in numerous ways,” his lyrics say.

Hotdogs and cake were served at an open house at the Bentley Museum following the service.
