With nearly 900 collisions per year in Alberta construction zones, Rimbey RCMP has issued a reminder to drivers to stay alert and slow down.

Police say that speeding fines double in construction zones where workers are present and fines range from $252 to $991. If a driver is caught travelling 50 km/h or more over the speed limit, they will be required to appear in court.

Speed limits must be followed in construction zones, whether or not workers are present, unless otherwise posted. In addition to ensuring worker safety, construction zone speed limits help prevent other hazards that might be present.

Rimbey RCMP offer these tips to ensure safe travel through construction zones:

• Obey all posted traffic signs
• Plan your route in advance and give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go
• Use extra caution and watch out for road hazards while transiting through construction zones
• Maintain awareness of your surroundings, and be prepared for sudden stops
• Avoid passing other motorists until you are out of the construction zone
• Be patient
