Rimbey RCMP to step up campaign against illegal drugs

While Rimbey may be the community of choice for many to settle in or an idyllic place to raise a family, it certainly hasn’t been immune to more big-city problems such as the use of illegal drugs and the Rimbey RCMP is vowing to do something about it.

“Unfortunately, illegal drugs occur in even the best communities,” said Sgt. Mark Groves. “The RCMP in Rimbey are working hard to put a dent in the supply of illicit drugs available in the community. Rimbey is not immune to the drug problem.

“Most property crimes such as break and enters and thefts relate to drugs being the root of the motivation behind the crime. When parolees breach the conditions of their release from custody it is often because of a relapse and indulgence with their drug of choice.”

Groves said the drug trend in Rimbey is not unlike that of many other towns in Western Canada and added that marihuana, cocaine and ecstasy are the drugs most commonly found in the area.

“Cocaine is the most widely spread drug which causes issues, mostly because cocaine has a highly addictive nature. The Rimbey RCMP will continue to aggressively target individuals involved in illegal activities and will use every possible tool and agency available." Groves said. "We will be focusing on street-level crime, crime hot spots and prolific drug and alcohol offenders. Through intelligence analysis and focused enforcement measures, the detachment's strategy aims to combat illegal activities to reduce crime and promote a safe and secure community.”

Groves also made a public reminder to those involved in the illegal drug trade, or other illegal activities, that any assets used to commit crime will be seized as offence related property.

“Another sad but true reality is that often kids are involved,” he added. “It is common that parents will do drugs in the presence of their children or attempt to be a parent while still under the influence and the RCMP and community partners strive hard to reduce these incidents."

The RCMP strongly encourages members of the community to report any crime or suspicious activity either directly to police or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
