Rimbey’s Jordon Freerksen brought home the third place trophy for the small bus competition from the 2022 Provincial School Bus Road-eo, June 4 held in Nisku.
65 drivers from thirteen companies throughout Alberta were challenged by a written test and eleven road obstacles including a country turn around, student pick up, railroad crossing and right turn, parallel park, curb park, diminishing clearance, left turn, offset alley, straight line, stop line, and a surprise event for parking the passenger front wheel on an envelope of cash.
Freerksen, who is a third-generation bus driver, said that now that he has his own son, he values the time he can spend with his family while working as a driver.
“Having a job where you can take your kids and get quality time off is what drew my mom, dad and grandma to school bus driving,” said Freerksen. “My mom has been active with Road-eo for over 20 years and my dad has competed for about 15 years and both have won numerous road-eo’s.”
This is the first time Freerksen has competed in a bus road-eo and he said that one day he hopes to join his parents in the elite group of people who represent Alberta at the International Safety Competition.
