The members of a local Santa’s Anonymous committee are working to make sure those in Buck Lake, Winfield and Alder Flats can celebrate the holidays with food and gifts.

“What we typically do is collect donations from the community and surrounding companies. Monetary donations, food, gifts, anything we can, and we collect everything, get it together and we provide it to families who need a little bit of help during the Christmas season,” said Julie Hanson, secretary for Santa’s Anonymous.

Hanson says donations are needed now more than ever, as many families are struggling to make ends meet due to inflation.

“We have some elderly folks that are pretty alone, and this really is kind of a pick me up for them.

“Even families who are well off are struggling. Food is expensive. So, I think there’s just more need than there’s ever been right now for this type of thing,” she said.

This year, the group is adding some upgrades to their system. Those looking to donate can now do so through e-transfer, in addition to cheque or cash donations. The group also sends email updates.

“We really tried to change things, kind of modernize it,” said Hanson.

“Just kind of trying to keep up with the 21st century.”

Santa’s Anonymous is currently accepting donations and has multiple volunteer positions available. While preparations began in October, there is a need for volunteers to help sort and prepare packages for the recipients.

Hanson says the group takes three or four days in December to sort donations and buy additional food and gifts.

Anyone interested in volunteering or learning more about how to donate is asked to contact Santa’s Anonymous’ president, Karen Holmans, by calling 403-318-6739.
