Dealing with students who live in a secret world where they witness family members being kicked or hit or otherwise abused is a priority for Wolf Creek Public Schools board.
School liaison workers from several schools throughout the division gave a presentation to trustees at their May 15 meeting as to how they are increasing awareness among students and staff as to domestic violence.
Through the use of newsletters, posters, bookmarks and a PowerPoint presentation, the workers provided insight, information and statistics about family violence.
Chairman Trudy Bratland said the board decided to make domestic violence a priority after becoming aware that it is an ongoing problem among students.
“It seems some students who may be classified as special needs really only need a safe place because they are dealing with family violence at home. All they need is a safe place. It does definitely affect student learning.”
Ponoka trustee Lorrie Jess was pleased with the presentation from the school liaison workers. “It is amazing how young some of the students are who are having problems as a result of domestic violence.”
She is “hopeful” increased awareness will make difference. “We need to get it out there.”
Lacombe trustee Bob Huff said he is concerned about the students.
“What about these little people who are growing up and meeting all of these conditions. I think of all the little people - what are we doing for them?”
School liaison workers will distribute information to the schools through the methods presented to the school board to help increase awareness.
