Three talented musicians will visit Rimbey later this month thanks to efforts of the local library and library manager Jean Keetch.
The Springbank Trio will hold a concert at 2 p.m. on Feb. 10 at the Rimbey United Church.
As The Springbank Trio, Laurie, Tom and Jamie have been performing together for over 30 years. They enjoy exploring the vast repertoire for piano trio—not only well-known compositions, but more unusual pieces, besides.
All of the musicians offer a rich background of musicial talent.
Laurie Syer teaches violin and viola students in the small community of Bergen, Alberta. A former member of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, she has performed as soloist in a wide variety of venues in western Canada and in Europe. Laurie is a founding member of Calgary’s Allegra String Quartet, and has performed as a chamber musician with such groups as the Lyric Chamber Players, New Works Calgary and many other ensembles, both in Alberta and British Columbia. She is founding Artistic co-Director of Strings & Keys: a summer music workshop which welcomed dozens of students to Bergen beginning in 1995. Laurie is involved with many community projects, and enjoys gardening, baking in her outdoor wood-fired oven, and hanging out with her Border Collie, Skipper.
Tom Mirhady has been playing cello since the age of nine. He grew up in Vancouver and attended the University of British Columbia and the conservatory in Cologne, Germany, and received a Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University and Master of Music degree from New York’s Juilliard School. He has been a member of the Calgary Philharmonic since 1979. He teaches cello at home, at the Mount Royal University Conservatory and at the Amici Strings program, and enjoys playing chamber music and gardening.
Dr. Jamie Syer was Dean of the Victoria Conservatory of Music 2010-12, and formerly Head of the Keyboard Department there. While in Victoria, he was also on faculty at the School of Music, University of Victoria. Dr. Syer completed his graduate degrees at the Yale University School of Music with Claude Frank and Ward Davenny. He has taught at Universities and Colleges in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and New Brunswick. Jamie is known for his imaginative recital programming, and his artistic, energetic playing. In addition to his musical activities, Jamie was Manager of the Sundre Municipal Library 2013-2018.
The concert is sure to brighten even the coldest February day and the musicians will be a wonderful addition to the rich tapestry of arts and culture that is evident in Rimbey.
