Winter storms keep RCMP busy on the road

The Rimbey RCMP dealt with 42 calls for service.

Highlights of the week included many collisions, a drug bust, two stolen trucks, a break and enter, and more collisions.

Winter’s wrath

Winter driving conditions seemed to overwhelm many drivers last week. In total, staff dealt with a whopping 20 motor vehicle crashes. Many of the collisions were serious rollovers and in some cases involved large semi-trailer trucks. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

Surprisingly, officers are still stopping speeders. Many folks think that because they have a four-wheel-drive truck or SUV they can maintain their usual driving habits — one thing they fail to realize is that a vehicle with four-wheel drive does not stop any faster than one without. All of the rollovers were 4x4 trucks. Please slow down and drive according to the road conditions, not according to the maximum speed limit that is set to account for optimal road conditions.

Barns collapse

Last week, the snowfall caused many barns to collapse and there were a few occasions when roads were closed due to serious collisions. It would be a good time to get yourself and your family more prepared in case of an emergency. There is an excellent website dedicated to just that. Please see www.getprepared.gc.ca for more information.

Dope den busted

On Jan. 16, at approximately 2 p.m., RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence in Rimbey. Police arrested and charged James Armbrust, 24, with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and another criminal charge relating to proceeds of crime. A quantity of marijuana bud, a digital scale, Canadian currency and other drug paraphernalia was seized during the execution of the warrant.

One lost, one found

Sometime during the night or early Wednesday morning on Jan. 19 someone stole a 2007 Ford F350 black crew cab dually from a car dealership lot in Rimbey. The Alberta plate on the truck is JYJ701. The truck has a six-inch lift and had “Black Pearl Concrete” written on the side doors and mud flaps.

That same day, police located another stolen Ford F350 in the Medicine Lake area that had been stolen from Edson. The truck had been driven off road and abandoned

by the thief when it became stuck in deep snow.

Sea cans burgled

During the week, someone cut the locks of a gate and entered an oil lease off Medicine Lake Road. Once on the lease site they broke into a sea can. This is the third sea can broken into in as many weeks in the Rimbey area. The investigation is continuing into all of these incidents. It is unknown if they are all related.
