Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) is developing plans for the start of school in the fall, and has allotted a $400,000 budget to ensure they are prepared.

At its board meeting on June 18, WCPS approved the funds to pay for additional supplies, personal protective equipment, staff, resources and other contingencies as part of school re-entry plans for September.

The school division is developing plans for three different possible scenarios, based on the guidance from Alberta Education and Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Those scenarios are: 1) normal school operations are able to resume, 2) schools are partially reopened, with some level of restrictions, and 3) teacher-directed at-home learning continues.

Education Minister Adrianna LaGrange has stated that it’s hoped scenario No. 1 will be possible, with additional health measures in place, but it will depend on local health needs.

“Wolf Creek Public Schools has spent considerable time in creating a Re-Entry Guidance Plan for September to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment, while preserving the kind of classroom structure students are accustomed to,” said superintendent Jayson Lovell in a letter to parents dated June 24.

The re-entry plan includes protocols for cleaning and symptom screening.

The number of custodians will be increased and there will be enhanced cleaning and sanitizing of high-touch areas, including during school hours. Buses will be cleaned and sanitized after each run.

Screening tools will be implemented to ensure a student or staff member does not attend school if they have symptoms or they are ill.

COVID-19 sections will be set up on each school’s website, where parents can get updates in August. Each school will have its own re-entry plan posted in these sections once they are finalized.

The Government of Alberta is expected to inform school divisions what scenario for school re-entry they can expect, by Aug. 1.

Ward boundary review

During its June 18 meeting, the board narrowed its electoral ward boundary review to two options, and requested more information on a third option. The issue will be re-examined at the October board meeting.

Board chair, vice chair, committees selected

The board held its annual organization meeting. Trustee Pam Hansen was elected as board chair and trustee Luci Henry was elected as vice chair.
