CUMMINGS


Mrs. Alice Martha Cummings of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre ~ Area Two, Rimbey on Monday, November 30, 2009 at the age of 98 years.


Alice was born on October 29, 1911 on a farm in the Sunset Hills area, west of Bentley. She attended a country school until grade eight, and graduated from a hairdressing college in Edmonton in 1935. Alice met and was united in marriage to George Cummings in 1936. When she was 65 years of age, she took swimming lessons and swam every day for the next twenty years! This mother also baked 27, 375 loaves of bread for school lunches throughout the years! Alice loved her family dearly. She persevered and encouraged her nine children to achieve their grade twelve high school diploma… and succeeded!


Alice will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her four sons, Stanley (Karen) Cummings of Grande Cache; Harvey (Fran) Cummings of Edmonton; Rodney (Irene) Cummings of Ottawa, Ontario; and Barry Cummings of Fort McMurray; and her four daughters, Marjorie (Norman) Strause of Ponoka; Marilee (Marvin) Dick also of Ponoka; Melanie (Dave) Wills of Red Deer; and Marie (Allan) Lockhart of Rimbey; as well as twenty-nine grandchildren and forty-two great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her brother, Joseph (Helen) Solberg of Sylvan Lake; and six sisters, Olga Newton of Prince Rupert, B.C.; Violet Taylor of Red Deer; Gladys Jensen also of Red Deer; Inga Beddoes of Rimbey; Myrtle Patapoff of Eckville; and Julia Kinna also of Eckville; her daughters-in-law, Neretta Cummings of Sandy Lake, Alberta; and Ermine Cummings of Calgary; her sister-in-law, Ida Solberg of Sylvan Lake; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. Alice was predeceased by her beloved husband, George in 1994; her son, Wesley; her grandson, Val Strause; five brothers and three sisters.


A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Alice's Life was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Rimbey on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend David Holmes officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. A Family Interment Service will be held at a later date in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery, Bentley, Alberta.
