Arthur Vernon Moebes (said MOE BESS)
May 17, 1926 — August 1, 2005
Arthur Vernon Moebes, Art, to everyone who knew him, was born at
home just south of Hoadley on May 17, 1926. Art was the youngest
of 10 children born to Charlie and Wilhelmena Catherine Anna (Lamm)
Moebes.
Art worked at home and also for neighbors and companies near home
until he was 18 when he went to work for Lamb’s Construction. At
the age of 19 he was the youngest foreman that Lamb’s Construction
ever had. He was also their Head Mechanic and one of their highway
finishers. While with Lamb’s Construction, Art married Sylvia Fowler
(who was always known as Goldie and predeceased him in 1985).
They traveled to construction sites from one end of Alberta to the
other until 1955. It was then that Art chose the quarter directly west
of where he was born to settle and raise his family.
Over the years, Art worked for Hoag’s Mill as a laborer and for many
years with the County of Ponoka as one of their division grader men.
He also ran cat for many people in the area in order to build up his
farm. Two of the men he ran cat for were Fred Drader and Charlie
Plank. Art also had a Sawmill at the farm for a few years where he cut
his own lumber with the help of neighbors and friends. Much of that
lumber came from the logs off the quarter just north of his home. This
quarter he purchased from his then employer, Fred Drader.
When Art and Goldie came home to the farm in 1955 they lived in a
small trailer while they built their “from scratch” home together. That
original home has been moved but is still in use at the farm as the
garage. They raised two children in that home, Shirley born in 1952 and
Brian in 1956.
Art was well known in the community to be a man you could always
count on and one you could make a deal with by a handshake. Art
loved being a farmer and was very proud of the farm that he built. He
believed strongly that “if you look after the land — it will look after
you”.
On November 22, 1986 Art took Katie Tarr for his wife and they spent
the last 19 years working and playing together. Art loved farming but
he also loved to dance and floor curl. He and Katie spent many
evenings on the dance floor and completed in the summer games in the
Old-Time Dance competitions many times. They also Floor Curled
together and won many bonspiels.
Art was predeceased by his Father and Mother; three Brothers: Bill,
Charles and Jim; one sister: Louise; wife Sylvia and an infant son.
He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Katie, daughter Shirley
King of Rimbey, and son Brian and wife Pat of Bluffton. His grandchildren

Stony Plain. Angela and Chad Oram and great-grandson Owen of
Rimbey. Trevor Moebes of Bluffton, Vernnon Moebes and friend

Lacombe. His oldest and only living brother: Fred and Thelma Moebes,
