June 14, 1933 - August 23, 2021
Beate Lohmann of Hoadley, Alberta passed away peacefully at her home, with family by her side, on Monday, August 23, 2021 at the age of 88 years.
Beate "Trixie" was born on June 14, 1933 in Friesack, Germany to Lutheran Pastor Otto Wettberg and Ilse Wettberg. In her youth, she enjoyed many adventures with her friends and family. Her strength of character began when she, along with her parents and three brothers, endured many hardships during WWII.
Her kind and compassionate nature compelled her to study pediatric nursing in Germany. During this time, she met and married Bernd Lohmann on December 23, 1952. Not long after, in April of 1953, they fulfilled their dream of immigrating to Canada. Their arrival in Canada started at the Halifax harbour, and they drove their Volkswagen car to the prairies.
They purchased their first three quarters of land, and their farmland base continued to expand in Hoadley, Alberta. Their mixed crop and livestock farm flourished over the years with pigs, sheep, beef and dairy cows, horses, chickens, and of course, many family pets. Through the years, they lovingly raised five children who worked tirelessly together with their parents in the production of these animals and crops.
Beate, as a dedicated and caring mother to her five children, was inspired to grow a very large vegetable garden, milk dairy cows (cream quota), bale hay, sew her children's clothing, cook, bake, do canning, crochet, knit, and quilt - all to lovingly provide for her family. She was very proud to support each and every one of her children through their completion of post-secondary education; making her feel ensured that they would each have a strong and stable future.
Beate loved to travel, play bingo, take bus trips to casinos, volunteer for the Hoadley Happy Gang, enjoy activities at the Hoadley Hall; and she also joined TOPS. Some of her most memorable trips included: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and many areas of the United States - including an Alaskan cruise - as well as Nova Scotia/Cape Breton, and Hawaii.
She tremendously enjoyed her five children, thirteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, along with her siblings, extended family, friends, and neighbours. Beate made a devoted effort to maintain the German language and traditions. Everyone who spent time with Beate knew her for her smile, kind words, sense of humour, and generosity.
Her family is very thankful for her numerous caregivers, the Wetaskiwin Dialysis Unit, Rimbey Handi-van volunteer drivers, the Rimbey Hospital and Respite Care, the Rimbey Health Unit and Home Care, the Red Deer Hospital - Unit 31, and so many more...Our angel, our Mutti, Oma and Omi, has left earth and now resides in heaven.
Beate will be lovingly remembered by her five children: Lutz (Ina) Lohmann of Hoadley; Jörg (Edelgard) Lohmann of Hoadley; Dieter (Lue-Ann) Lohmann also of Hoadley; Antje (Detlef) Rottmerhusen of Valleyview; and Sigrid (Shaun) Marchand of Leduc; as well as thirteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her two brothers, Wolf (Gerti) Wettberg of Germany; and Karsten (Gisela) Wettberg also of Germany; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Beate was predeceased by her parents, Ilse and Otto Wettberg; and her brothers, Heinz Wettberg, and Jobst Wettberg.
A Funeral Service to Celebrate Beate's Life will be held at the Hoadley Hall, Hoadley on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Barry Klassen officiating. Interment will follow in the Hoadley Cemetery.
