It is with great sadness we announce the passing of "Shorty". Dmetro William Holosko was born in Calgary on Nov. 13th 1936 to Alfred and Stella. Soon after his arrival in the world, they moved to Bluffton Alberta and established a homestead farm that would become his parents' legacy. Deciding that farming wasn't for him at an early age, he set forth across the prairies working the oil fields and learning to drive the big rigs. It was here that he gained the nickname "Shorty". He would carry that name proudly for the rest of his life. In 1961, he took a chance and shifted his focus west and to discover Terrace, which rapidly became his forever home. His long driving career took him down almost every highway between Whitehorse, Terrace, Kitimat and points further west. If you have driven any road in that circle, you have probably traveled more than a mile or two that he helped build.
If you knew Shorty, you knew him to be a true friend, generous of heart and spirit, with an incredible sense of humour. However, first and foremost was his unflinching sense of kindness and compassion. The roads he built were just a framework of friends and family that wove a tapestry thousands of kilometres wide. His presence, like his spirit, will be forever missed and cherished by those that were lucky enough to know him.
Shorty is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Penny Holosko; his two sisters, Pat/Jim and Joyce; his four sons, Kevin, Tim, Rusty and Ted; his three daughters, Julie, Dana and Margot; a host of grandchildren, a legion of great grandchildren, and many, many adopted sons and daughters. Shorty passed peacefully on February 14th after a brief battle with cancer. His absence and loving influence cannot be overstated. A celebration of life is being planned later this summer.
