May 15, 1920 - December 3, 2020
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear mom, Ethel Marie Stephenson (nee Pederson).
Mom was born in a farm house outside of Bentley on May 15, 1920 and passed on Dec 3, 2020. She celebrated her 100th birthday on May 15, 2020 and although we couldn't all get together to celebrate, we did so in our own special ways.
A few at a time would have a visit through the fence at the back of the Bethany Care Center, blowing her birthday wishes to where she was seated. No birthday cake was allowed at that time.
Mom was the oldest of four children born to Elmer and Ella Pederson and was raised in the Sunset Hills west of Bentley. She talked of the times how she and her sister Pearl went out looking for wild strawberries, blueberries and saskatoons which were plentiful in the hills at that time.
Along with the tame raspberries, they always made sure they had enough to preserve for the winter months. Lard sandwiches were also very common at that time.
Mom would also talk of the times when she and her sister would leave early by horseback for the Sunset school so they could get their potato on the potbellied stove so they would be baked by noon.
Mom was a fantastic cook and loved to bake. She never complained about the big country meals she made for her husband, 5 kids and many thrashing crews, that worked on the farm. Dad and mom raised their family on the farm west on Bentley at the bottom of Stephenson Hill. She was truly an inspiration to her children and grand children who all believe in hard work.
Mom moved to Bethany Care in Sylvan Lake in 2016, where she resided until her passing.
Mom will always be remembered by her children Keith (Binky), Judy (Dale), Dave (Marlaine), and Wendy (Mike). And son in- law John Salomons. She is also survived by 15 grand children, 33 great grand children 5 great great grand children. Mom is also survived by her sister Pearl Petruk and sisters-in-law Evelyn Pederson, Beatrice Wuth, and Odell Stephenson, and many relatives that are too many to mention.
Special mention to a comforting friend Gisela Hahn.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Robert, daughter Marilyn, Marvin (Marilyn's twin who died at birth), her grandson Blaine and her great grand daughter Rashel and her two brothers Elwood and Ervin Pederson.
Mom was a humble, kind hearted lady who never complained, who loved her God, her family, and her community.
A very small family funeral will be held Tues Dec. 8 at the Sylvan Lake Funeral Chapel with a Christian burial at the Bentley Cemetery following. We are all hoping we can celebrate later in 2021, with family and friends when the timing is right.
Rest in Peace sweet mom.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ethel's name to charity of choice
