BARNES, Gladys Marie

Sept. 1940-Feb. 2018

Gladys (Walroth) Barnes of Rimbey, formerly of the Lacombe/Clive District passed away on February 7, 2018, at the age of 77 years.

Gladys was born on September 27, 1940 in Innisfail, Alberta. She was raised on a farm with her parents and siblings in the Turner Valley area. They moved to the Tees/Mirror area where she attended the Gadsby Lake and Mirror school.

Gladys met John Barnes (Jack) on a doubles blind date, where Jack had said "I'm going to marry that girl". They were married in December 1959 and were married for 50 years. They moved around a little, then settled in Stettler where they raised four children. Then in 1972 they moved to the Barnes family farm where they farmed for 17 years. Regrettably they moved off the farm and moved back to Stettler. Gladys was a great cook and always had fresh buns, pies and an extra plate was set at the table for whom ever stopped by. She would always take out meals to the grain fields and enjoyed driving grain truck, baking, gardening, ladies aid, ceramics, crocheting and milking her one cow.

After the children had grown, Gladys worked at the Tomboy in Lacombe, then later they moved to Stettler, where she worked at G & H Foods, enjoyed helping customers and the people she worked with.

In 1998, they moved to Gull Lake, where Gladys liked going for walks with her dog Spike and her neighbours. She enjoyed babysitting, gardening, baking, camping and having company. After Jack passed away, Gladys moved to Lacombe, then to Red Deer and finally to Rimbey.

Gladys is survived by her four children: Kim (Greg) Felt of Summerland, British Columbia, Deborah (Dennis) Sorensen of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Laurie ( Kevin) Connolly of Red Deer, Alberta, John Barnes of Lacombe, Alberta. Her one brother Alfred (Doreen) Walroth of Red Deer, Alberta.

Gladys has 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Her favourite niece Lisa and long time friend Doreen Walroth and Maudie Luft, her travel buddy.

She was predeceased by her husband Jack Barnes, her parents Theodore and Violet Walroth, her sister Florence and brother Edward.

Gladys was cremated. Gladys's four children would like to invite family and friends to a Celebration of Life, for her, that will take place at Nebaska Hall (Near Tees, AB), on July 14, 2018, at 11:00 am.

Glady's four children would like to thank the Rimbey Hospital staff on the Dementia/Alzheimer's unit and the Sylvan Lake Furneral Home. A special thanks to those who were a big part of mom's life and whom had a special place in her heart.

Mom and Dad are together again. Have a good one. Love and miss you, forever and always.
