Gladys Myrtle Calkins formerly of Bentley passed away at the Long Term Care Centre in Rimbey on Monday, October 3, 2016 at the age of 99. Gladys was the eldest daughter of John and Mabel Anderson and was born on January 20, 1917 while her parents were homesteading at Round Hill. Gladys married Elmer Calkins on December 10, 1936 and they celebrated 65 years of togetherness before Elmer passed in 2002.
Gladys was raised on a farm near Forshee and spent the rest of her life in Bentley except for the last four years which were spent in Rimbey Long Term Care.
Gladys was predeceased by her father and mother, her husband, Elmer, sisters Eva Anderson, Ruby Hicks ,Doris Tackaberry and her husband Bourke .
Gladys will lovingly be remembered by three daughters and their families: Donna Curtis and Jim McIntyre of Winfield (Brian and Diana Brown of Caroline, Todd and Joyce Brown of Winfield); Janet and Dave Fretwell of Paso Robles, California (Terra Fretwell and Malcolm McNamara of Alexandria, Virginia, Shannon Saramaa and Deon Lourens of North Bend, Washington); Gail Wilson and John Schafer of Bentley (Darren and Laurie Wilson of Lacombe, Deanna and Bernie French of Ponoka) and 14 great grandchildren : Amanda (Daniel) Everall, Jamie Brown; Austin,Valenna, Montana, and Brooklyn Brown; Sydney, Morgan and Drew Wilson; Carly (Daniel) and Curtis French; Mila and Haley Saramaa and several step great grandchildren as well. She is also survived by her sister Dora MacLean, nephew John (Margo) Tackaberry and niece Janice (David) MacLean and numerous other extended family.
A celebration of life was held at Rimbey United Church on Friday, October 7 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Deborah Laing officiating. Donations in Gladys’ honor may be made to the charity of your choice.
