Joan Dolores Nowell

On January 9, 2012 Joan passed away peacefully at the age of 78 years at the University of Alberta Hospital. She had a courageous early battle with cancer, then with Parkinson’s disease and late onset dementia. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Richard “Bud” Mathes and her brother, Brian Nowell. Joan is survived by her daughter, Coleen (Simon) Gittens and their children; Michael and Sarah; her brother, Blayne (Elaine) Nowell; sisters, Iris Nowell and Dell (Henry) Collins; as well as numerous adored nieces and nephews. Joan loved horses and she was also an accomplished artist, noted particularly for her life-like horse portraits commissioned by Alberta’s leading thoroughbred owners. The family extends its gratitude to Blayne and Elaine for their dedication to Joan’s well-being in her final years, and to the outstanding caregivers at Eaux Claire Extendicare and Doctors V. Luyckx and N. Kassam at the University of Alberta Hospital. At Joan’s request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January14, 2012 at Appel Funeral Homes/Central Memorial Chapel,
