FROM

Oliver Gustaf

Jan 28, 1919 - May 6, 2016

Oliver Gustaf From was born Jan 28th, 1919 near Pike's Peak, Saskatchewan, the first child of Ellen Sofia Lindgren and Gustaf Wilhelm From. The family soon grew to include two sisters and two more brothers. Like most other families in this area "north of the Gully" and south of the North Saskatchewan River, the farm had a few pigs, sheep for wool, cows and horses. The farming was marginal but the trapping helped out. In 1927, the settlers got together and built a school which Oliver happily attended up to grade 8. The Depression was still grinding on though and in 1939 the family moved to the Kettle River area of southern British Columbia where the farming was still marginal but the trapping and hunting was better. Oliver worked at logging and farming, but when he was discharged from the army with a hip injury at the age of 21, he built a 14 x 18 foot hunting cabin and started an outfitting business. This only occupied him for two months of the year so he also made railway ties and bought a few cows. In the 1950's, Oliver got his first purebred Hereford and this became the beginning of a lifelong enterprise. On October 7, 1949 he married Inez Agnes Sherwood, who was teaching at the nearby one room Kraus Creek school. In 1960 Oliver and Inez bought a farm on what is now the outskirts of Calgary but Oliver soon saw greener pastures in Bentley, where they moved to in 1963. This was "God's Country" to a cattleman like Oliver and he and Inez spent the next 50 years building a reputation with their registered Herefords. In 2006 Oliver was elected to the Alberta Hereford Hall of Fame. What he didn't know about cows was not that important. Oliver is survived by his wife Inez, his partner in life for 67 years. A funeral service for Oliver will be held on Tuesday May 17, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Bentley Community Church, 4633 53 Avenue, Bentley, Alberta with interment to follow at Bentley Cemetery 46 Street, Bentley, Alberta.
