POFFENROTH

Vernon "Vern" Edward Poffenroth of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the age of 78 years.

Vern loved farming, camping, hockey, and the Calgary Stampeders, but most of all he loved being around his family. He was known as a caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, arena guy, coach, and friend. In his younger years, Vern farmed in De Winton and High River. After some time, he moved to Calgary where he worked various jobs, and where he met his best friend and the love of his life, Bev. Soon though, Vern's love of farming drew them to make Rimbey their home. Together, they farmed for several years before moving into town. Many hockey players, figure skaters, and parents will remember friendships built with Vern as the Rimbey Arena Manager or hockey coach, which he enjoyed doing until their retirement. Upon retiring, Vern made new memories and cherished friendships while they embarked on full-time RV'ing, wintering in Nk'Mip (Osoyoos, B.C.). During the summer months of his retirement, along with Bev, he treasured the time they spent hosting at the Peaceful Valley Recreational Area. No matter how many people met Vern, whether meeting him for a short moment or knowing him for years, he made room in his heart for them.

Vern will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Bev; two sons, Wes (Aileen) Poffenroth of North Battleford, Saskatchewan; and Terry Poffenroth (Jaimie Cooney) of Sylvan Lake; and two daughters, Wanda (Richard) Peschel of Calgary; and Trista (Sean) Court of Edmonton; as well as ten cherished grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sister, Arlene Edwards of Rimbey; his brother-in-law, Blane Roy of Hinton; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many close friends. Vern was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Hilda Poffenroth; his sister, Evie Snider; and two brothers-in-law, Dalton Roy and Winston Edwards.

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Vern's Life was held at the Rimbey Arena, Rimbey on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer.
