Viola TOEWS

August 30, 2009

TOEWS, VIOLA

Our dear sister and aunt, Viola Toews was born on September 27, 1937, to Abe K. and Elisabeth Toews at Grande Prairie, AB. She departed this life on August 30, 2009, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, Red Deer, AB after a short six week battle with cancer.

Her early years were spent on the homestead in Crooked Creek, AB., where she began her schooling. When she was ten years old the family moved to Linden. A year and a half later the family moved to Rocky Mountain House area where she continued her schooling.

At seventeen years of age, Vi gave her heart to the Lord and was baptised into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in a little log church at Oras, AB, by Minister Isaac Toews. She remained faithful to her vows until the end. In 1954 the family again moved back to Linden where she spent her youth years.

Fulfilling a life long dream she entered practical nurses training and graduated in 1959. Vi enjoyed her nursing career for 50 years and just lately commented on how she had always enjoyed nursing. During her career she was employed at the Three Hills Hospital, Linden Nursing Home, Rostern Hospital in Rostern, SK, and the Rimbey Hospital.

Two memorable years of her life were spent at the mission in Hague, SK.

After the passing of her folks and sister, she went to live in Rimbey, AB. to work in the hospital. She lived there 17 years, making many close friends and enjoying the small congregation. She became Aunt Vi to everyone. She returned to Linden two years ago in her retirement years.

Vi is remembered as a spunky lady, enjoying life and living it to the fullest. We remember her soup and biscuits and one niece commented she was soup for the soul as well. She was always willing to help where she could and spent hours helping different families during times of illness and death. All her nieces and nephews, including the great nieces and nephews, felt they were special to her. She had a way of making everyone feel loved. Her specialness was obvious during her last hours when several generations of family surrounded her bedside to say their last goodbyes.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her brothers and sisters; Claude and Mae Toews, Rimbey, AB; Margaret and Basil Evans, Three Hills, AB; Lillian and Alvin Loewen, Linden, AB; Vern and Mary Toews, Dewberry, AB; Harvey and Eileen Toews, Rimbey, AB; Dennis and Hannah Toews, Creston, BC, presently serving in Jamaica. sister-in-laws, Eleanor Toews, Stettler, AB, and Anne Toews, Linden, AB. Also missing her are her 42 nieces and nephews, 101 great-nieces and nephews and 6 great-great nieces and nephews. Many dear friends will also mourn her passing.

Waiting for her on the other side are; her parents, her sister, Leona, her brothers, Wilfred, Edward and Marvin; a sister-in-law, Verna and four great nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to all the nurses and doctors in the ICU unit at the Red Deer Hospital for their tender loving care of Viola during her last days.

Funeral Services were held Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Linden, AB with interment in Linden Cemetery.
