NIKIRK

Violet (Vi)

1926 - 2009

It is with great sadness that the family of Violet Nikirk announces her death in the Red Deer Regional Hospital, early on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009. She has been dearly loved, and will be long remembered, for her gentle spirit, her quiet dignity, and the twinkle in her eye. Vi was 83 years old. Vi was pre-deceased by her first husband, Ken Carson; her mother and father, Venice and Jack Monteith; and her second husband, Harold Nikirk. She is survived by her brothers, Clifford and Virgil; her sister and lifelong companion Gay; her son and only child Garry; her daughters-in-law, Linda and Sharon; her grandson and granddaughter Brad and Kim, her grandson-in-law Deniz; and her two great-grandchildren Gabriel and Atiye. Vi was born in Eckville, Alberta on April 29th, 1926, and moved with her family to the Rimbey area in the mid 30's. After marrying Ken Carson in 1942, she remained in Rimbey while he served in the Canadian Forces. In 1948, her new family moved to Vancouver, then Red Deer, and finally settled in Edmonton in 1951. In 1964, she returned to the family farm west of Rimbey. Following the death of Ken Carson in 1985, Vi married Harold Nikirk in 1990, and lived with him on his acreage north of Rimbey. In 1998 she returned with Harold to the Town of Rimbey, where she has resided to the present day. For the past three years she lived in the Parkland Lodge. The central theme of Vi's life was her lifelong commitment to her family and community. Vi worked at the Rimbey Auxiliary Hospital for 9 years, and since retiring, has been an active member of the Red Hatters; participated in many local seniors groups; and has enjoyed traveling in Canada and internationally. Highlights of her final years have included camper vacations with Harold Nikirk; traveling to Ireland with her grandson Brad; visiting her son and daughter-in-law in Mexico with her cousin and devoted friend Helen Lenart; bus tours with her close friends Mary May and Herb Bauer; and enjoying precious time with her two beloved great-grandchildren in Calgary. Vi has also enjoyed the rare comfort, in our increasingly scattered world, of spending her final years surrounded by her brothers and sister, her many cousins, nieces and nephews; and hosts of lifelong friends, some of whom she was in grade school with. Memorial Services will be held at the Rimbey United Church, on Tuesday, December 1st, 2009, at 2:00 PM, with Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Box 440, 5228 - 50 Avenue, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0.
