SYDNEY C. BUTLER

September 29, 1923 ~ April 20, 2011

It is with great sadness that the Butler Family announces the passing of their beloved parents, Mrs. Yvonne M. Butler and Mr. Sydney C. Butler. Yvonne passed away at the Olds Long Term Care Centre on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the age of 83 years. Sydney passed away in the comfort of his son's home in Olds on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the age of 87 years. Yvonne and Sydney resided in Olds since 2005, and were former residents of Rimbey.

"While you both, dear parents, rest and sleep … Your loving memories, we’ll always keep."

Yvonne was born in Salmon Arm, B.C., and Sydney was born in New Westminster, B.C. They were united in marriage in New Westminster, B.C. on December 10, 1945, and this past December marked the celebration of their 65th Wedding Anniversary. This union was blessed with three daughters, Patricia, Sharon, and Katheryn; and one son, Sydney Jr. In the early 1950's, Yvonne and Sydney relocated to Alberta where they worked side-by-side in many business adventures. Some of these endeavours included a butcher shop, a furniture store, and ice cream parlours. Finally in 1962, they moved to Rimbey where Yvonne and Sydney purchased the Rimbey Bakery and Coffee Shop. With their children helping them by their side, it truly was a family business. As each daughter was married and left home, Yvonne and Sydney continued to run the bakery with the help of their son, Syd Jr., who was later joined by his wife, Shirley and their children. It was an extraordinary event when Sydney Sr., Sydney Jr., and grandson, Ron all completed their journeyman baker degree at NAIT, and in achieving this unique feat they were recognized as the first ‘three generation' family to realize this special distinction and were honoured by NAIT for their accomplishments. Syd Sr. was very proud of this. The Butler’s were a baking family, with a niece and son-in-law becoming bakers as well.

Yvonne and Sydney were actively involved in their communities, belonging to many service clubs over the years such as the Royal Canadian Legion and the Lions Club. Yvonne was instrumental in establishing the Parkland School Foundation in Red Deer, and Sydney drove school bus and was a Mason member. They were also always very supportive and proud of their children's, grandchildren's, and great grandchildren's accomplishments. Yvonne and Sydney made time to enjoy many other things together as well, and loved to go camping, fishing, bowling, square dancing, and do a little traveling. With Yvonne's declining health, in 2005 they decided to relocate to Olds to be closer to Syd Jr. and Shirley so that they could lend a helping hand. Yvonne spent the last 4 1/2 years in Long Term Care where she was always wearing a smile and was very quick to tell you that she loved you. Syd was a frequent visitor to his wife, and they could often be found sitting side-by-side, holding hands, and fast asleep. Yvonne passed away on February 1, 2011. With Syd's declining health and a fall that broke his hip, in January, 2011 he moved in with Syd Jr. and Shirley to enable them to care for him. He didn’t want to be hospitalized, and his wish was granted as he passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side.

Yvonne and Sydney will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by their children, Patricia (Randy) Fiddler of Hinton; Sharon (Larry) Nelson of Robb, Alberta; Katheryn (Larry) Gunderson of Edson; and Sydney Jr. (Shirley) of Olds; in addition to eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Together, Yvonne and Sydney will also be sadly missed by many other relatives; as well as a wonderful network of cherished friends. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of both Yvonne and Sydney's Lives was held at the Rimbey Church of the Nazarene, Rimbey on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with Mr. Dave Mulligan officiating. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Yvonne and Sydney's Memory may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta T2N 4N2; or to Olds Hospital and Care Centre ~ Long Term Care, 3901 - 57 Avenue, Olds, Alberta T4H 1T4.Condolences may also be expressed by e-mail to: special_reflections@telusplanet.net
