As we approach the holiday season, it's important to remember that not everyone has it easy. This can be an especially difficult time for some people, especially those working in the service and retail industry. I find it important to just go into the season with an open heart and try and understand where other people are coming from.
Some people I've come into contact with in the stores are, let's just say, not the nicest, and might just land on Santa's naughty list, but it's important to not judge right away.
When I catch myself quick to judge, I try and put myself in their shoes. It's a busy time of year, one of the busiest in the stores, surrounded by lights, decorations and crowds. The stores can also be packed with families and happy faces, as the holidays can often bring out joy in many people. For those suffering without family or friends, and working long hours, it can be very tiresome, often bringing out anger and shortness.
I definitely know how it is in retail. Back in 2015 and 2016 I worked two jobs, one of those being in a mall. It was a side gig I had right around the holidays. The extra money was nice and I often loved seeing the mall all decorated for the holidays. What I didn't love was the busyness and long hours of the job around the holidays. Often times there are good sales around that time as lots of people are looking for that perfect gift. Expectations from customers and bosses can be high, and it can be a lot of stress and pressure on the employee. I definitely felt the burnout of the holidays, so I try and give grace to those working behind the till, because I know how hard it can be.
So, as you are shopping for that perfect gift or simply just browsing the deals, remember to be polite and patient to those helping you. They are only human too. It's okay to have a bad day. It's a tough time of year for some people, and remember that not everyone is lucky enough to have family nearby or any family left for that matter.
Seasonal depression is also at an all-time high this time of year, so have some grace, smile and try and have some understanding for those working hard to support themselves and others. It is, after all, a time to be grateful.
