Ottawa, ON: On Oct. 16, our Governor General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston delivered the Speech from Throne to open the second session of the 41st. Parliament.

In his delivery Our Government committed to three core themes – Creating Jobs and Opportunities, Supporting and Protecting Canadian Families, and Putting Canada First,

Our Government will introduce Balanced Budget legislation requiring balanced budgets during normal economic times and concrete timelines for returning to balance in the event of an economic crisis additionally our Government will freeze the overall federal operating budget, which will continue to restrain hiring.

Our Government is committed to farmers, we have provided marketing freedom which is helping our farmers adapt and innovate. We will continue to foster new markets around the world for Canadian products, while supporting supply management.

Our Government is committed to our Veterans, we will provide further support to help meet their needs, including helping them secure jobs and reintegrate into civilian life.

Our Government recognizes the tremendous potential of Canada’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit populations to strengthen the growing Canadian economy. We will continue to work with First Nations to develop stronger, more effective, and more accountable on-reserve education systems.

Workers must be able to use their skills, wherever in Canada they choose to work. Provincial borders should not be employment barriers. Our Government will work with provinces and territories to improve credential recognition and enable the free movement of skilled workers. It is important that Canadians always have the first chance at available jobs.

“As a proud Albertan, I am very pleased to see our Prime Minister committed to legislation to balance the Budget, the importance on free market agreements will only help our local producers insofar as getting their products to global markets, these measures are good for Alberta and the people of the Wetaskiwin riding.” Calkins said.
