Camp offers high level training

Young volleyball enthusiasts will have a chance to pursue their skills on the court and prepare for playing the sport at a higher level

Young volleyball enthusiasts will have a chance to pursue their skills on the court and prepare for playing the sport at a higher level in the future at a special camp to be held this summer.

Graham Vigrass, a middle blocker for the University of Calgary Dinos and a seasoned veteran of Team Canada Volleyball B Team, is offering a volleyball camp in Ponoka Aug. 7 to 10 and in Rimbey Aug. 13 to 17.

Vigrass will offer the camps through the South Western Technical Volleyball Clinic (SWAT). The organization’s focus is to integrate a variety of techniques and disciplines to optimize the performance of each athlete.

Vigrass plans to run the Rimbey and Ponoka camps and several other similar camps in the area throughout the summer. Cole Dziatkewich and Sammy Fraser, also experienced volleyball players, may assist Vigrass.

This is the first time Vigrass has offered the volleyball camps, but has coached at similar camps previously.

“Our teaching will be focused on what level each individual player would like to get to increase their skills and advance,” he said. “Players have a better chance of making their high school team or club team if they have training offered at a camp.”

The U of C student, who is completing his degree in natural science with a concentration of geology and math, said similar camps are popular in Calgary and Edmonton.

He plans to hold a camp in Consort Aug. 20 to 22, Oyen Aug. 23 to 25 and in Taber Aug. 27 to 31.

“We were only planning on doing a couple of camps, but from the interest we saw in Oyen we contacted other high schools,” he explained.
