Dynamites girls’ fastball team captures provincial title

Rimbey Dynamite girls’ fastball team exploded on the field, sweeping round robin play with resounding victories to capture the gold medal

Rimbey Dynamite girls’ fastball team exploded on the field, sweeping round robin play with resounding victories to capture the gold medal win and earn the provincial championship.

The Dynamites defeated Millhurst Ballstars 19-11 July 7 in Rimbey in the final game.

Twelve-year-old Ashley Weiss, a starting pitcher on the team, was a little surprised they won handily, but very happy about it.

“We have won all of our games so I wasn’t totally surprised.”

The young ball player will be going into Grade 7 this fall and also plays hockey.

Shelby Lane, 11, plays second base and shortstop for the Dynamites. She has been playing with the same group of girls since she was six years old.

“It’s fun and I get to be with my friends. Baseball is my favorite sport probably because I have been playing it the longest.”

Coach Chris Weiss is proud of all of his players and grateful for the parents for their continuing help and support.

“The team has played well all year, but they saved the best for last. They were really swinging their bats. The pitching was amazing, too.”

Weiss said the provincial tournament went off without a hitch.

“There was great sportsmanship. There were no incidents and we were lucky to have the weather we had. The stands were full. It was good to see and it was nice to win in our hometown.”

The Dynamites started off the tourney by defeating Meadows Rapters from Edmonton 21-6. They defeated Nose Creek Crushers from Calgary 20–8 later that day.

They then went up against Okotoks, scrapping a 12-11 win against that team.

“They were a really strong team,” said Weiss. “It was a close game.”

They went on to defeat Beaumont 10–4, and won against Wellington Royals from Edmonton 13-7.

The Coronation Steelers won bronze.
