Expansion sees eighth team join Western Alberta Six-Man Football League

Staff reporter

The Western Alberta Six-Man Football League is on the grow again.

After just three years in existence, the league has gone from four teams to seven and this year they’ve added another in the form of the Victory Christian Crimson Knights who play out of Edmonton.

The league has realigned the divisions and will see the Caroline Cougars, Buck Mountain Central Mustangs, Ponoka Broncs and Rimbey Spartans playing in the South Division, while the Knights will join the Breton Cougars, (Edmonton) Mill Woods Royals and Frank Maddock Warriors of Drayton Valley in the North Division.

As in the previous two years, all the teams in the league will participate in the playoffs with the first-place team facing the fourth, and second squaring off against the third.

Following this past week’s play, the Buck Mountain Central Mustangs will host the Warriors on Sept. 25 before travelling to Edmonton on Oct. 2 to face the Crimson Warriors for interdivisional games.

Following that it’ll be a rematch of the season opener when the Mustangs will visit the Spartans in Rimbey on Oct. 9. From there, the Mustangs will host Caroline on Oct. 15 and close out the regular season against the Broncs in Ponoka on Oct. 22.

The Spartans’ schedule includes hosting the Royals for an interdivisional game on Sept. 25 before heading north to visit the Breton Cougars on Oct. 1.

On Oct. 9 the Rimbey squad will get their chance for a bit of revenge from a season-opening 38-14 loss to Buck Mountain when they host the Mustangs. Following that, it’ll be a Highway 53 showdown when the Spartans travel to Ponoka on Oct. 15 before their final regular season game on Oct. 22 when they host Caroline.

The league’s playoffs, which will see the highest ranked team as the hosts, will begin on Oct. 29 with the quarter-finals followed by the semifinals on Nov. 5 and the league championship game on Nov. 13.

All home games for both the Buck Mountain Mustangs and Rimbey Spartans begin at 4 p.m. with playoff games beginning at 3 p.m., if applicable.
