While the Rimbey Rock continue to tray and find their place in the Heritage Junior Hockey League following a one-year absence last season, the Bentley Generals have secured their spot at the top of the Chinook Hockey League, at least for now.
Following action from this past weekend in both leagues, the Generals find themselves in first place in their respective league, but that could change.
Having completed their schedule on Saturday, January 19 with a big 7-2 win over the Fort Saskatchewan McEwen Eagles in Bentley, their previous game – a 4-3 loss to the Stony Plain Eagles the night before, could come back to haunt them.
With two games in hand, the Eagles sit just one point behind the Generals for top spot in the league and home ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
And it gets worse.
With their final two games of the season being played against the second-last place River Cree Warriors who have won only three games in 17 attempts this season; and the league’s worst Rocky Rams who have one less win than the Warriors, the likelihood of the Eagles overtaking the Generals is almost guaranteed.
The Chinook Hockey League has released no playoff schedule yet.
As for the Rock, it was another up and down weekend including a loss last Thursday night in Rimbey to the Ponoka Stampeders by a score of 3-2, but followed that with a huge 4-3 victory over the Red Deer Vipers on Saturday night in Red Deer.
The win and the loss kept the Rock in second place in the Prairie Division, four points ahead of the Stampeders but still well back of the first-place Three Hills Thrashers who lead the division with 42 points on 20 wins.
Upcoming action this week of the Rock includes a Friday night tilt here in Rimbey when they will be hosting the Claresholm Generals and a Saturday night road game in Didsbury against the Mountainview Colts.
