The seesaw battle of the Chinook Hockey League’s titans continued this past weekend as the Bentley Generals and Stony Plain Eagles met for the first two games of the best-of-seven league championship finals.
And true to form, both teams recorded a win and a loss.
The series opened on Friday night in Stony Plain and after an almost scoreless first period, the Generals hit the scoreboard with just two seconds remaining in the period when Dwayne Hay scored from Darryl LaPlante to give Bentley the lead.
The Eagles responded with two of their own in the second period when both Mike Thompson and Jeff Drummond tallied to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.
After a scoreless third period, the Eagles had jumped into the series lead but the game was a chippy affair with the Generals taking 11 minor penalties compared to 10 for the Eagles who also took a 10-minute misconduct.
Bryce Wandler took the loss in the General’s stopping 25 of 27 shots while Jason Fricker picked up the win for Stony Plain stopping 28 of 29 shots.
The following night the teams met for Game 2 of the series which was played at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer.
Once again the Generals got off on the right foot, but this time they didn’t let their lead slip away.
Ray Schultz opened the scoring at 11:06 of the first period on the powerplay from Mark Woolf and Dwayne Hay before Donald Morrison added to the lead with less than two minutes later from Woolf and Terry Ryan.
The Generals kept the foot to the floor after scoring early in the second period when Matt Holmes found the net from Hay to up the lead to 3-0. The Eagles responded mid-way through the period when Bryan Kondo score unassisted.
The Generals salted away the win late in the third period on the powerplay with Woolf scoring from Darryl LaPlante and Joe Vandermeer giving Bentley a 4-1 win and tying the series at one win each.
