Get out and get fit this summer

TREENA MIELKE/Rimbey Review

There is no excuse for being a couch potato in Rimbey this summer.

Community services co-ordinator Peter Stenstrom is introducing more opportunities to keep the community fit.

His latest trial balloon is a Fun Fit program to be held Tuesdays and Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for ages 16 and up at the Rimbey Community Centre.

“The program will run year-round in six two month segments,” said Stenstrom. “You only need to register for two months at a time. The goal is that within the two months you will significantly improve your overall fitness level and ultimately improve your quality of life.”

The program, to be taught by Tammy Freitag, a certified personal trainer, will offer a variety of keep fitness moves such as working with resistance bands, stationary exercises intense enough to help participants feel a burn, going through an obstacle course and full body workouts.

“We want to provide ways to learn to be active in your normal life after the program,” said Stenstrom.

A Mom & Tot fitness program to be held from 10 to 11 a.m. from July 5 to Aug. 25 is designed to allow moms to work out with their children.

The program is to be instructed by Christine Makofka from Body Connections.

“What I envision is a cardio-vascular opportunity including strength training, stretching and flexibility. It will be a real opportunity for parents to show their kids the benefits of staying in shape through example,” said Makofka.

“The possibilities are endless. I plan to take a lot of direction from parents and work with what they would like to see happen.”

Stenstrom is also offering racquet Tuesdays for players who struggle to find competition.

“Trust me, there are lots of them out there,” he said.

Stenstrom encourages players to go to any tennis, racquetball or squash court and take on all challengers.

“This program is a drop-in format, there is no guarantee of space or opponents. Stenstrom said the only requirements are that participants take the effort to share court time and self-govern fairly.

A community centre membership or drop in fee is required for use of the racquetball and squash courts.

Yoga in the Park, also offered through the town, has been ongoing at Pas Ka Poo Park and is proving to be quite popular.
