A student-athlete at the University of Alberta’s Augustana campus in Camrose has had an incredible sports season.

Shaelyn Boyes, an Augustana volleyball player with a Rimbey connection, has been voted most valuable player for her team for the season, an all-conference award through the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, an acknowledgement award and Female Athlete of the Year for Augustana.

Unfortunately for Boyes, and the team, she was sidelined when the team headed into playoff action where they ended up going out in the first round of play.

“I was on crutches,” said Boyes.

“We’re a pretty young team. I think next year will be our year.”

According to Boyes, she is almost fully recovered from the ankle injury that sidelined her and is now just working on range-of-motion exercises. Over the summer she intends to work on conditioning so she is ready to get back onto the court in the fall.

Boyes will be heading into what will be the fifth year of her kinesiology degree this fall.

While the degree is supposed to be a four-year program, according to Boyes it is not uncommon for student-athletes to extend their programs to five years to help them better manage time.

“Things are crazy busy,” said Boyes.

According to Boyes, she has always been drawn to sports.

“I played a lot of sports growing up,” said Boyes.

“I really liked volleyball the best. Volleyball was my big passion for sure.”

Other sports Boyes participated in her youth include badminton, cross country running and basketball, softball and gymnastics when she was younger.

Before making the trek to Camrose, Boyes spent her life growing up in the Rimbey area on a farm near the community.
