Two minor hockey teams have set the pace early in the 2009-10 hockey season with some impressive tournament wins.
Among them are the Rimbey atom A Wolverines who captured the gold medal at a tourney held in Wainwright on Nov. 28 and 29. The Wolverines won all four games they played, and in each case racked up some serious offense.
The Rimbey squad opened with a 9-3 beating of the host Wainwright Huskies before crushing the Lloydminster Servus Credit Union 10-1. From there, the Wolverines poured it on even more in a 12-0 shutout of the Vermillion Webbs before dispatching the Sherwood Park Stealths 7-2 in the championship game.
Knights undefeated in two tourneys
The Rimbey midget Knights also had a productive November after going undefeated in two tournaments. However, they only won one of them.
On the weekend of Nov. 14 and 15, the Knights headed to Ponoka for a tourney that called for round-robin play with each team playing four times. If two teams tied in the end with the best record, the championship would be decided by the most goals scored and unfortunately for the Knights, the Bow Valley Flames of Calgary outscored the local squad to win the event.
In the name of sportsmanship however, that night not be the end of the story as the Knights have invited the Flames to Rimbey to settle the matter once and for all but as of press time, the Flames had not responded to the invitation.
