Rimbey senior athletes came home from the Canadian Senior Games in Saint John, New Brunswick with gold and silver medals, big smiles and wonderful memories.

Duncan Congcar is especially happy to be sporting a gold medal in golf after he defeated players from Saskatchewan, Toronto, Manitoba and New Brunswick. He scored 92 on Aug. 22 and 93 on Aug. 23 after playing 36 holes at the Wood Rock Golf Course.

“I got a few birdies and a few pars,” the 80 plus senior said, admitting he had a few seven stroke holes, too.

But, not one to be discouraged by a few bad holes, he focused on his game and managed to snag the gold in his age category.

“It’s a big, excellent honour,” he said. “I felt so proud of myself and the Town of Rimbey. My former students cheered me and my two sons cheered me and lots of other people and my wish came true.”

Congcar gives special thanks to all the members of the Gull Lake Golf Course for their support. He added that Eamon McCann who owns the golf course with his wife, Carla helped him with his putting and he credits the time spent at the local course for helping him hone his skills.

“I’m just so happy,” he said.

Lorraine Jarl, Barbara Patey, Alvin Goetz and Marion Repas from Rimbey and Carol Kyle from Calgary brought home silver in the bowling competition.

“It was a challenge,” said Patey, noting that the candlepin bowling they competed in is much different than the five-pin bowling they are used to.

“It was very different,” added Jarl, “but we had so much fun.”

The Alberta bowlers lost to Prince Edward Island in the gold medal game. The bronze medal went to Saskatchewan.
