Spartans fourth at provincials

By TREENA MIELKE

After going undefeated in league play and winning zones, Rimbey Spartans high school boys’ basketball team almost brought home a bronze medal in provincials.

The team composed of grades 10 to 12 players went into provincials, held March 17 to 19 in Didsbury, as the 10th

seed out of 12 teams.

The team, fresh from winning zones when they defeated Central Alberta Christian School from Lacombe in Bawlf on March 12, handily defeated Calgary Christian School 77 to 63 in the first game of the tournament.

The Spartans kept their winning momentum strong, going on to win their second game, defeating Didsbury, who was ranked second, 62 to 60. However, a disappointing 77-57 loss to Pitcher Butte meant they were vying for third place in their next game against West Island College.

A 75-43 loss in that game gave them a fourth-place finish.

Coach Tim Lekas is proud of his team.

“They would have liked to have finished third and received a medal, but they did well. They beat the number 2 team. And making it to provincials in an achievement in itself. And they had a great season. They were undefeated in league play.”
