Spiel winners repeat

The annual Bentley Mixed Bonspiel had been moved up a couple of weeks this year to try to find a date that didn’t conflict with other area bonspiels but the date seemed to confuse some people. This year it ran from March 9 to 12 and was down in entries by four teams.

Added this year was a continental breakfast sponsored by Servus Credit Union on the Saturday morning. It was followed by a banquet at the club Saturday evening.

The minor hockey arena concession was open. Cash was paid to the winning team after each win. There were lots of donated door prizes.

Overall 2011 A Event champion was the team skipped by Jeff Kamlah from Lacombe, with lead Anna Millar, second Kaitlyn Sherrer, and third Dana Kamlah. They defeated the Paul Norvila rink in the final after being down 8-7 coming home and drawing for two in the last end to win 9-8. Walter Lloyd finished third and Harvey Brink fourth. Kamlah had placed third in the B event last year.

The B Event saw a repeat winner from 2010 with a team skipped by Gull Lake’s Ralph Scarlett with team members this year of lead Ron Barnes, second Norm Start, and third Shirley Barnes. They won 7-5 over the Norm Rieu team without having to throw their last rock. Al Elliott ended in third and Wes Hawkings fourth.

The C event also had a repeat winner in the local Dennis Duncan Rainy Creek rink with other members Sylvia and Doug Culshaw, second Orest Kozakevich, and third Laurie Duncan. They defeated Gord Mydland 6-4 after seven ends. Bruce Millar was third and Cecil Galloway fourth.

Rimbey’s John Hatala with lead Lloyd Sheiln, second Monty Haslan, and third Audrey Grinde won the skins event.

The mixed bonspiel concludes another season of Bentley curling with only a few regular games left to play.

The Bentley Curling Club’s annual spring meeting is March 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the club lounge. It is open to all current and prospective members and guests.
