The karate students of Central Alberta Martial Arts and Wellness Centre probably have some pretty sore arms, but what would one expect after completing 5.000 pushups?

As the wins keep racking up for most of his fighters, Coach Mike Smith of the Rimbey Boxing Club is finding himself with more and more of a dilemma.

Eighteen teams competed in the 2008 Bentley Farmer’s Bonspiel that ran Nov. 25 through 29. The undefeated champs were Lionel Baron, Dwayne Baron, Doug Grinder, and Bill Baron from Ponoka who defeated the Gord Graves foursome from Lacombe in the first event final.

Over the past decade or two, the emergence of women in sports generally considered to be part of the male domain has been growing by leaps and bounds.

The Rimbey Rock had some pretty prestigious friends over for a visit recently in the form of the Calgary-based Oval X-Treme women’s hockey team and in the process, the Rock raised nearly $2,800 and promptly donated it to the Canadian Cancer Society’s research foundation with the aim of finding a cure for breast cancer.

Now that football season is over and the 2008-09 hockey season is nicely underway, here’s an invitation to all the teams in our coverage area to let us know how your teams are doing.

It’s a bit of a stretch to compare a football team with a wedding party, but for the second consecutive year the Rimbey Spartans made it all the way to the altar only to come away as bridesmaids following a 20 – 8 loss to the Breton Cougars in the championship final of the Western Alberta Six-Man Football League.

Rimbey Tie-Down rodeo competitor Dean Edge continued to rack up the wins in the past month or so, and also put some big dollars in his pockets following two big performances in Calgary and Consort.

Last year at this time, they were little more than a series of X’s and O’s on a piece of paper, but in just 12 short months, the Buck Mountain Mustangs have gone from paper to grass and were on the verge of advancing to the championship finals of the Western Alberta Six-Man Football League.
