In 1986 when the inception and recognition of the need for rural community transportation was on the forefront in Rimbey, the Blindman Handivan Society came to fruition.
With long standing residents loyal to the cause, a few board members and loyal volunteers the service was up and running. Some of whom have been involved still to this day. Notably recognized is the recent retirement of their treasurer Barb Patey. Talking with Howard Steel, the society’s president about the long-time service that now prides two vehicles to provide rides to anyone in the community whether you have an appointment to go to, family visit, lunch outing, medical or groceries.
The opportunities for rides to Red Deer, Calgary, Edmonton and neighboring communities like Ponoka, Wetaskiwin, Sylvan and Rocky Mountain House are available and for a specified fee. We have an in town driver and an out of town driver, who we are very grateful for as they are instrumental to the service. “This is a vital service to Rimbey,” said Steele explaining that “if it was not for grants received to the society from the Town of Rimbey and the County of Ponoka this service would not be possible for the community.”
With two vans utilized for services and improvements to the vehicles needed such as updating lifts for wheelchair accessibility, the Handivan Society has held strong by this support as well that from local non-profit groups and service clubs. “We are so grateful to all out volunteers and the drivers who put in countless hours helping those who need transportation in our community.”
