Cpl. Bruce Lussier of the RCMP Central Alberta Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) has been charged with assault following an internal investigation by the RCMP.

The alleged incident occurred on May 9, 2023 near Breton, Alta. According to an RCMP release, officers recovered a stolen vehicle that had rolled into the ditch.

The alleged driver of the vehicle was arrested and taken to hospital. According to the RCMP, the suspect was treated for an injury sustained during the roll over.

“After the arrest of the suspect, concerns were raised about the conduct of one of the arresting officers,” states the release.

“On May 17, 2023, RCMP contacted the Director of Law Enforcement who determined the incident to be out of scope of ASIRT and directed the RCMP to investigate. The RCMP initiated a statutory investigation to gather a full account of what took place during this incident.”

Lussier, 42, was charged with assault causing bodily harm on March 1, 2024. He has been placed on administrative duty and his next court date is set for April 10, at the Court of Justice in Breton.

During the investigation into the thefts, the RCMP recovered stolen vehicles and other property and arrested three suspects.
