- In emergency situations: Where it’s unreasonable to wait at a walk-in medical clinic or hospital emergency room, pharmacists can write emergency prescriptions.

“Over-the-counter medications are helpful, but if you catch a cold sore when you feel that first tingling we can also prescribe anti-viral pills. They can shut down a cold sore in two doses, so it isn’t as severe and doesn’t last as long,” Ziegler says.

“The shingles vaccine is over 90 per cent effective — which is very high — and definitely worth getting. We can let you know if you’re a good candidate, check to see if your health insurance will cover it and write the prescription right away,” Ziegler says.
